Rava Idli Grilled Cheese- No bread Indian fusion sandwich
Rava idli grilled cheese using rava idli mix. This healthy and nutritious sandwich is not made using bread but using rava idli batter instead! My mother-in-law made this for me and I fell in love with it. It’s so full of flavor thanks to all the ingredients in a rava idli butter and the melted cheese inside adds the extra magic! This is perfect for the cold weather and for breakfast and snacks during the holiday season. It’s so versatile because you can change up the filling and you can make it in a sandwich maker or waffle maker! Only 5 ingredients and you get something yummy and healthier! It’s not gluten free!
Happy Cooking!
Servings: 4-6 sandwiches
Prep Time: 10-15 mins
Cooking Time: 10-15 mins
Total Time: 30 mins
Ingredients:
About 2 cups rava Idli batter- check notes
3/4 cup grated Mozzarella or Amul cheese
4-5 chopped green chilis
2 tbsp chopped coriander
2-3 tbsp heavy cream
1 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp chaat masala
Butter to spray/brush the pan
Directions:
If you are using ready-to-mix idli mix, prepare that first as per package instructions. Check notes for what I did.
Chili cheese filling- In a bowl add grated cheese, chili, spices, coriander, and heavy cream. Mix it till evenly combined.
Turn a sandwich pan/waffle maker on. Lightly brush with butter.
Fill the hollow with a little rava idli batter, just enough to cover the base completely.
Top each of the filled hollows with a little bit of the cheese mixture in the middle. I used about 1.5-2 tbsp per hollow.
Top with some more of the idli mixture to cover the filling and form the sandwich shape.
Close the sandwich maker/waffle pan. Let it cook for 6-10 minutes till both sides are crispy and it’s cooked through. It can take more/less time depending on the size of the sandwich/waffle and how hot your machine gets. It took me about 8-9 minutes.
Remove from the maker once it’s cooked through.
Serve immediately with a chili sauce or chutney of your choice!
Notes/Tips:
I used MTR rava idli batter. I followed the instructions for making it as per the package and made 1.5 cups of powder worth.
You can use ready idli batter or homemade or ready-to-mix batter like I did.
Make sure you crisp up both sides of the sandwich well.
Serve immediately to get the gooey cheese inside.
You can also fill it with dosa masala. I have a recipe here.
