French Onion Sliders

These are delicious easy oven-baked sliders that are full of flavor, giving a fun way to use caramelized onions inspired by the flavors of a french onion soup. The sliders are layered with sauces which give so many flavors like a creamy mustard one and a hot sauce for spice! The sliders have perfectly caramelized onions and potatoes along with melted swiss cheese! To take these sliders to the next level they are baked in the oven with a butter mixture poured over it which has seasonings that soak into the buns and add this amazing flavor to the sliders. It’s an explosion of flavors and textures from the first to the last bite. I love making these sliders when I have guests over because it’s easy to make and cook in the oven and they’re so yummy that they are always wiped clean!

  • 1/2-1 tsp Minced garlic

  • 1/2 tsp Chili flakes

  • 1/2 tsp Oregano

  • 1/2 tbsp Soy sauce

  • 1/8 tsp Black pepper

  • 1/2 tbsp Sesame seeds

Directions:

  1. Onions: Put a saute pan on low-medium heat and add butter.

  2. Once melted add onions and give it a toss for 2-3 mins.

  3. Turn the heat to low and let the onions cook and caramelize. Keep stirring in intervals to prevent it from sticking or burning. This entire process can take 30-40 mins.

  4. When the onions have almost reached the caramelized point, add the bouillon cube, salt, and pepper. Mix it in.

  5. Cook on low and saute till you’re happy with the caramelization of the onions. Keep aside to cool slightly.

  6. Mustard mayo mix: In a bowl mix mustard and mayonnaise. Keep aside.

  7. Slice the potatoes so thin that you can see through them.

  8. Preheat the oven to 350F.

  9. Assembly: Assemble the buns on a foil/parchment-lined baking tray to make it easier.

    • Slice slider buns horizontally in half.

    • On the bottom half of the buns spread the mayo mustard mixture.

    • Layer with half cheese slices over it.

    • Top with caramelized onions over the cheese slices.

    • Layer the other half of the cheese slices over the onions.

    • Spread hot sauce on the top part of the slider buns.

    • Sandwich the slider buns.

    • Using a toothpick poke holes in the slider buns. be sure to get all the buns all over, including the sides and edges.

  10. Butter mixture- Melt butter and mix the soy sauce, chili flakes, oregano, minced garlic, black pepper, and sesame seeds.

  11. Pour the butter mixture over the buns and spread it all over.

  12. Cover the buns with foil and bake for 30-40 mins at 350F.

  13. Let it rest for 3-5 mins once out of the oven.

  14. Remove the foil, cut, and serve.

  15. You can serve these with any condiments you like

Notes/Tips:

  • Use savory slider buns. Sweet buns can make this recipe too sweet because of the caramelized onions.

  • Do NOT forget to poke the holes on the slider buns.

  • Covering with foil is a must.

  • I like using swiss cheese because it melts well but pepper jack cheese also works so well.

  • You can use shredded cheese instead of cheese slices but I recommend cheese slices for a more even melt.

  • Make sure your potato slices are sliced thin.

  • You can make the caramelized onions and keep them from before.
