Prep Time: 20 mins

Baking Time: 30 mins

Total Time: 50 mins

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vodka sauce, check notes

  • 1 box- 7.25oz mac and cheese, check notes

  • 1/2 onion cut as rings

  • 12-14 butter bread rolls- I used King Hawaiin savory butter rolls

  • 4-5 Cheddar cheese slice

  • 4-5 Mozzarella/provolone cheese slice

  • 2-3 tbsp Chopped herbs optional - I used sage

  • 1/2-1 tbsp dried herbs

Butter mixture:

  • 1/2 stick-55g Butter melted

  • 1/2 tbsp mustard- check notes

  • 2 tbsp Garlic powder

  • 1 tbsp Ketchup

  • 1/2-1 tsp Salt

  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 370F.

  2. Prepare Mac and cheese as per box instructions.

  3. In a bowl add the melted butter, mustard, garlic powder, ketchup, salt, pepper and mix it together. Keep the butter mixture aside.

  4. Slice the bread rolls in half. Place it on a parchment-lined baking tray.

  5. Spread 1/3rd of the butter mixture on the bottom layer of the buns.

  6. Top it with vodka sauce.

  7. Layer the cheddar cheese slices over the sauce.

  8. Spread out the Mac and cheese over the cheese slices. Layer the onions over the Mac and cheese.

  9. Layer the mozzarella/provolone cheese slices. Sprinkle fresh herbs if using over it.

  10. Cover with the top of the buns. Using a toothpick poke holes into the top of the buns.

  11. Spread the remaining butter sauce over the buns and spread it out.

  12. Sprinkle a mix of mixed herbs and chili flakes.

  13. Cover completely with foil.

  14. Bake at 370F for 20-25 mins, rotating the tray after 15 mins.

  15. Let it sit for 1 min outside the oven before removing the foil. Enjoy warm!

Notes/Tips:

  • Vodka sauce- Use a chunkier vodka sauce. You can make your own or use store-bought and thicken it up. I used this recipe. Skip vodka when making for kids or pregnant women. Cool the sauce before layering.

  • I used a box of kraft mac and cheese. You can make it at home fresh or use boxed of your choice.

  • Use savory butter rolls. It will be too sweet if you use sweet butter rolls.

  • Covering with foil is a must.

  • You can use any cheese slices you want, I recommend using 2 kinds for the flavor.

  • Make sure you make enough holes because you want the sauce to soak through.

  • Use any fresh herbs you want. I used sage but you can use basil, parsley, or rosemary.

  • Use stone-ground or yellow mustard. If you like it a little sweet add half honey mustard and half yellow/stone ground.
