Home-style Cheese balls

These home style cheese balls is a family recipe that I have been having since i can remember. They are delicious and very easy to make with minimal ingredients- 5-6 only. These cheese balls are crispy on the outside and so cheesy and melty on the inside. This is a must make recipe for anyone who loves cheese so if that’s you, you will love it. An indulgent recipe but one that is so worth it!

Servings: 12-15 Cheese balls

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cooking Time: 10-15 mins

Total Time: 30 mins

Ingredients: 

  • 1.5 cup shredded cheese- Use a mix of cheddar and Italian

  • 1 medium onion finely chopped

  • 5 tbsp chopped coriander

  • 2-3 small green chillies finely chopped or 1 tsp red chilli flakes

  • 1.5 tbsp softened butter

  • 1/2 tsp Cumin powder

  • 1-2 tsp salt to taste

  • 1/4 tsp pepper

  • 1/4 tsp sugar

  • 12-15 pcs sandwich white bread, room temperature- 1 pc per cheese ball

  • Oil for frying

Directions: 

  1. In in a bowl add cheese and butter. Whip it together.

  2. Add onions, coriander, chillies and seasonings (cumin powder, salt, pepper and sugar) and mix it all together.

  3. Mix till combined. Keep cheese mixture aside.

  4. Cut the corners off the bread.

  5. Sprinkle little cold water over a slice of bread. Use a rolling pin gently roll over the slice and flatten it. Repeat it for all the slices.

  6. Place 1.5-2 tbsp of cheese filling in the centre of the rolled out slice. Gently wrap the bread over the cheese enclosing it completely.

  7. Roll it gently into a ball. Use some water to close the seal she if need be.

  8. Repeat for all the slices and make all the cheese balls.

  9. Cook:

    • Deep fry- Deep fry them on a medium temp (about 340-360F) till they are golden brown all over. Tap off the excess oil on a paper towel. Gives the best result- crispy and thin coating.

    • Air fry- Air fry in a preheated air fryer at 370F for 9-13 mins till browned all over. You may need to flip it over in between. Gives a more denser result than deep fried. You need to spray a little oil before air frying.

    • Bake- Bake in a preheated oven at 380F for 10-14 mins till browned all over. You may need to flip it over in between. Gives a more denser result than deep frying.

  10. Serve immediately with a chilli sauce or ketchup.

Notes/Tips:

  • Amul cheese works great in this recipe.

  • Do not soak the bread in water or it will not work, just sprinkle some water. It will also cause problems while deep frying if there is water on the bread.

  • Roll it out and handle the bread gently so that it doesn’t break or tear.

  • Make sure the cheese is enclosed well in the bread.

  • Deep frying the cheese balls gives it a delicious crisp outing and cheesy inside. Air frying and baking them will give it a denser exterior.

  • You can make them before and keep it in the fridge and fry it just before serving. You must thaw it before before cooking.
