Garlic Roll Wreath with a French Onion dip

These garlic rolls are amazing, so buttery and full of flavor that it is going to be a must make at home. I used store brought pizza dough to make it and it was so easy! I made these as a pull apart wreath for holiday season and it looks so festive!

The French onion dip is so so good! Creamy with a delicious caramelised onion flavor and herbs- just a beautiful combination. It is so much better than store bought dip and so easy to make that you’ll never go back. It pairs so well with the garlic rolls. It is delicious to serve with vegetable, chips and crackers and perfect for parties and game nights.

Served like this together they make a great appetizer and is so pretty. I garnished it with tomatoes and herbs to give it more of a wreath look with a cute little bow on the dip. Don’t we all need such appetizers that look fancy but need minimal work? This is definitely one of these.

Happy Cooking!

Servings: 3-4 people; dip is enough for 6-8 people

Prep Time: 45 mins

Cooling time: 30 mins

Cooking Time: 15 mins

Total Time: 1.5 hours

Ingredients:

Garlic rolls:

  • 454g/1 lb pizza dough

  • 3 garlic cloves- chopped

  • 2 tbsp parsley chopped

  • 2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tbsp chilli flakes

  • 3 tbsp melted butter

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt & pepper to taste

French Onion dip:

  • 1.5 cup sour cream

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 2 yellow onions finely chopped

  • 3 tbsp heavy cream

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 2 cloves garlic-finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh herbs- I used a mix of parsley and sage

  • 1.5 tbsp chopped chives

  • 1-2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1 tsp chilli flakes

  • A pinch of sugar

  • 1-2 tbsp butter

  • 1 green chilli chopped (Optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400F- Or the temp as mentioned on your pizza dough.

  2. In a bowl add the melted butter.

  3. Add the chilli flakes, parsley, garlic, garlic powder, oil salt and pepper to it. Mix it together.

  4. Spread some of the butter mixture on a baking pan (ideally use a springform pan- 6-8 inch) and grease it.

  5. Divide the pizza dough in equal divisions- I made in 9 divisions about 50g each. 9-11 divisions should be good for this.

  6. Take each decision and tuck the edges under and roll it into a ball. Dip it well in the butter mixture and place it along the edge of the baking pan.

  7. Repeat this for all the decisions forming the garlic rolls and placing home along the edge of the pan. Each roll should be touching each other.

  8. Pour some of the garlic butter mixture over each roll.

  9. Place a bowl in the centre of the rolls. This will help ensure it bakes evenly. Ideally use the same size bowl hat you will fill with the dip. Do not use a very big bowl, it should fit in the centre with some space and not be on top the rolls.

  10. Cover the pan with a cling wrap and let it rest in room temp for 30 mins. It should increase in size.

  11. Bake for 12-14 mins or as directed in your pizza dough packet.

  12. While your bread rolls are resting and baking make the French onion dip.

  13. Add the remaining butter mixture to pan on low flame along with 1-2 tbsp butter.

  14. Add the chopped onions and cook it on a low flame to caramelise it.

  15. You should cook this for 10 mins till it starts caramelising. It can take upto 20-25 mins to caramelise well.

  16. Add the chopped garlic when the onions start caramelising and mix it in.

  17. When the onions are almost caramelised add in the salt, pepper, onion powder, chilli flakes and chopped herbs & chives and mix.

  18. When the onions are caramelised turn off the fallen and let it cool.

  19. When it cools, add in the sour cream, mayonnaise and heavy cream. Mix it together till it is all mixed together. Your dip is ready!

  20. When the garlic rolls are baked through let it cool slightly and take it out.

  21. Fill the bowl with the French onion dip and serve.

Notes/Tips:

  • French Onion dip:

    • Caramelise the onions well to get a delicious sweet flavor.

    • Chives add a delicious flavor to the dip so i would not recommend skipping it. For the other herbs use anything from basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary or sage.

    • Not only is it a great dip but is delicious as a layer in a sandwich as well.

    • It lasts well in the fridge for 7-10 days in an air tight container. It thickens up over time so you may need to add milk or heavy cream or sour cream to get it to the consistency you like.

    • Add the green Chillis to the onions when they are halfway cooked.

  • Garlic Rolls:

    • I used trader joes pizza roll. You can use any store bought or make your own. Be sure to follow the baking instructions as mentioned on the dough.

    • Try to use European style butter instead of cream style as it gives a better flavor.

    • Be sure to rest the dough well to make it softer. If not rested well the dough can be dense.
